Abstract

This article aims to analyze - based on the experience of Valentin, a healer from the periphery of Brasília - the contemporary tensions between the modern and the traditional, detected in the universe of exchanges between biomedicine knowledge and the traditional knowledge of popular communities about health. The study is supported by Marcel Mauss' theory of the gift and Jean Baudrillard's symbolic exchanges.
