Fact or Fake? Referential Processes and Argumentative Movements in the Digital Dynamic

This study examines how argumentation draws on referentiation in contexts where meaning disputes about social groups emerge online. We propose two specific objectives: (i) to analyze the construction of discourse objects in fact-checking productions and fake news, identifying argumentative moves articulated in networks and collectively performed; (ii) to investigate the strategy of (de)negation in referentiation, evaluating its role in strengthening what is framed as fact or fake within digital environments. The corpus encompasses: (a) fake news concerning the activities of the brigadiers of the Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio), retrieved from YouTube and Facebook; (b) fact-checking texts published by the agencies Aos Fatos and Lupa on their official platforms. Our theoretical framework is grounded in discourse and text studies (Charaudeau, 2022; Elias, 2005; Giering & Pinto, 2021; Koch, 2007; Marcuschi, 2007) and in the principles of the New Rhetoric (Perelman & Olbrechts-Tyteca, [1958] 2002). The analyses indicate that referential and argumentative strategies of negation play a central role in the examined fake news productions. Additionally, results highlight the recurrence of denegation in fact-checking texts. Such procedures are potentiated by the affordances of the internet and the web, which enhance networked articulations and collective performances.
