The Question of Democracy and its Disputes of Meanings in the Context of Bolsonarismo: Elements to a Critical Discourse Analysis of Meteoro Brazil’s Approach

Considering the visibility that the issue of democracy and its threats have increased over the last years, under diverse domains, especially, due to the resurgence of authoritarian political forces in Brazil, and elsewhere in the world, this paper, based upon the assumption that the antagonist nature of the social world (Laclau & Mouffe, 2015) implies disputes of meaning and hegemony around diverse themes and questions, analyses how the question of democracy is discursively constructed, in a video produced by the Youtube Channel Meteoro Brasil, and what this construction has highlighted, in terms of conflicts and tensions in the Brazilian political context. Taking as reference the analysis model proposed by Fairclough (2001; 2003) and Chouliaraki and Fairclough (1999), the discussion focuses on the strategies of intertextuality and interdiscursivity. The analysis has showed that the construction in question occurs fundamentally as a counterpoint to the discourse of democracy as a government for the majority, extensively reproduced by bolsonarismo, as a discursive symptom of a tense relation between this movement and its leader with the country’s democratic institutions and with minority groups. The construction in question articulates voices and discourses from political theory to show misconceptions and dangers of this discourse.
