Abstract

The mote “Seven fairies fated me” became notorious as one of the verses of a popular rimance collected by Almeida Garrett (1799-1854) and published in his Romanceiro in 1828. This same verse appears as the title of one of the tracks of the album Eu vou ser como a toupeira (I will be like the mole), by the Portuguese singer Zeca Afonso, released in 1972. The purpose of this study is to revisit the musician-literary tradition founded by such a mote in its variants, reinforcing the never completely broken links between literature and music.
