Abstract

This article intends to understand, from the reading of essays written in the 1930's, the position of Mário de Andrade regarding a still currently relevant matter today: which are the role and the social function of the artist and of the academic? It is on texts from that period – more than on the ones from the following decade – that some of the most cherished concepts to the author, such as "artistic consciousness", "artistry" and "betrayal" are attached, which justifies their resumption.
