The novel O Guarani, published in 1857 by José de Alencar, constitutes a powerful inaugural myth of the brazilianess. At the moment of writing, however, Alencar followed the dilemmas and debates about an apparently absent issue of the plot: the slavery, which was then the fundamental link of Brazilian society. Understanding the way in which reflection on the theme is presented in the novel is the purpose of this article.
