How can we connect literature with education? What is left of the Bildung when it is prompted by a shooting? Kafka’s tale not invites us to think about those questions, engaged as they are in terms of New Imperialism and acts of violence. The article tackles the predicaments of the loss of identity, of estrangement, of exile, together with issues of narrative, language and parody, arguing we are witnessing a Missbildung; not a formation, but a
deformation.
