Abstract

This paper aims to grasp the ways through which O discurso e a cidade [Speech and the city], a collection of essays from different periods (the 1970’s and the 1990’s in particular), is internally bound, thus revealing not only Antonio Candido’s literary practice, but also how his criticism responds to the historical and political reality of his time.
