Abstract

This paper concentrates on a close-reading of two essential passages out of Guimarães Rosa's works - the trial of Zé Bebelo in Grande sertão: veredas and the final duel in "A hora e vez de Augusto Matraga" -, examining how the author incorporates the conflicts between modern and archaic in Brazilian "sertão" to his innovative prose.
