Abstract

The paper reevaluates the presence of the academic writer Henrique Maximiano Coelho Netto (1864-1934) in the setting of the Brazilian avant-garde in the beginning of the twentieth century; it recounts clashes and unveils contacts, thus probing the many facets of the relationship between the modernists (Graça Aranha, Oswald de Andrade and Mário de Andrade, among others) and the person who was at the time considered the "antipode" of modern art. The article presents letters in which Coelho Netto refers to the "futurists".
