This article establishes relationships between João Cabral de
Melo Neto’s Morte e vida Severina and “Funeral de um lavrador”,
a song by Chico Buarque composed for the dramatic performance
of that work by the group of Teatro da Universidade Católica de São Paulo (Tuca) in 1965, and presents a discussion about the protest song composed for the theatre in the 1960s, as well as about its relevance today.
