In A Sentimental Journey through France and Italy (1768), Laurence Sterne challenges a number of conceptions that became current in England mainly from the second half of the eighteenth century onwards. Availing himself of the tradition of travel writing, which he parodies, Sterne takes his main character Yorick to France in order to ficcionalise an important debate in his own time, treating it humourously and wittily but not obliterating its contradictions.
