Abstract

Gilberto Freyre recovered, in Casa-grande & senzala, the lavish lifestyle of his relatives and ancestors and sought to reconcile the Brazilian elite with their slavery-bound past and authoritarian present. His interpretation of Brazil can be read as a sexual autobiography, in which the sociologist-writer gives a historical explanation for his enthusasm for mulatto women.
