Reconquistando Constantinopla: Políticas de memória e patrimônio bizantino na Turquia de Erdogan

A reconversão da Hagia Sophia foi um dos pontos máximos da instrumentalização das políticas de memorialização para fins políticos na Turquia. À luz desse acontecimento, este artigo objetiva analisar a relação entre o populismo neo-otomano de Recep Tayyip Erdogan e o patrimônio histórico bizantino na sociedade turca atual. A subjugação da memória bizantina é elemento básico do populismo conservador de direita, fundado na glorificação do passado imperial turco e no islamismo político. O combate ao fictício inimigo bizantino se confunde, na esfera do discurso, com o combate ao Ocidente, no plano externo, e à oposição kemalista, no plano interno. Erdogan busca sua legitimação a partir da aplicação dessa agenda populista.
