Abstract

During the last periods of pharaonic civilization the Apis bull became the center of an important popular cult in Memphite region but was not restricted to it. From its first appearances on First Dynasty artifacts as an animal linked to the kingship rituals it gained new iconographical depictions and the function of guide of the dead. The aim of this article is to expose briefly how this cult evolved during the Pharaonic Period based on iconographical and textual sources.
