Lex Iulia de Adulteriis, sexuality and politics, imperial order, gender relations in Ancient Rome.Abstract
This paper aims to discuss the ideas of imperial order and disorder related to the marriage laws of Augustus, mainly the Lex Iulia de adulteriis (Julia law on adultery). One of the objectives is to understand how the character of adulterer or adulteress, and the law itself, are related to the imperial politics as a factor of order or disorder. We also intend to discuss briefly about the manipulation of those laws in the early imperial Rome, and the relation between the crimes of adultery and maiestas.Downloads
