Abstract

The present text aims to put under discussion the variety of conceptions about the Christian episcopal office in the first century C.E., considering Claudia Rapp’s view that this office bore, during the period in question, only an administrative function regarding the community’s material goods. With this aim, I analyze the definition of the episcopal office given in the book of the Acts of the Apostles to question the universality of such configuration among the first Christian generations.
