Abstract

Today, amid the modern district of Testaccio in Rome, lie only two traces of what once was a colossal monument, whose dimensions and construction techniques indicate that the building once had a major importance in the ancient city’s life. However, the available sources are not yet sufficient for the definitive identification of the monument’s identity and primordial function, though being enough for producing some relevant theories. This article intends to compare the existing theses and analyze the debate about the so-called “Porticus Aemilia”, inserting in it some considerations deriving from the recent excavation campaigns carried out in the area.
