The aims of this essay are double: first, discussing some of the recent tendencies of thinking and interpreting the Roman Empire, and second, proposing a certain point of view that intends to help in updating the comprehension of what was the Roman Empire in the longue durée and the position it should be granted inside the setting of a Global History. The general concepts that guide this attempt are order, integration and boundaries.
