It’s virtual, but the impact will be real: the perverse face of the Metaverse

This article aims to highlight, based on the psychoanalytic model of perversion, the challenges of the communication put in place by Mark Zuckerberg’s company, to present the Metaverse to the world. The investigation starts from the analysis of advertising films released by Meta, with a special interest in the final statement of these advertisements: “The Metaverse may be virtual, but the impact will be real.” It demonstrates how such a proposition fits into the Mannonian formula of perversion and how Zuckerberg’s project fits perfectly into the movement identified as generalized perversion, which preaches unlimited jouissance. This investigation followed a qualitative bibliographic methodological approach, applying discursive-textual analysis to the investigative approach. The result of this of this trajectory indicates that the Metaverse, by acting as a gigantic fetish object, symbolizes the perverse propensity of social functioning in postmodernity.
