Dysphoric bodies in the city of Rio de Janeiro in the territorialities constructed by the carioca Ballroom scene

Abstract

We sought to analyze the implications of the process of popularization of the Ballroom carioca scene, which began in the second half of the 10s of the 21st century and which has gained more visibility recently in public and hybrid spaces in the city, as being part of a trans movement, which contributes to the construction of a more inclusive and democratic city, even in an adverse context characterized by the expansion of political polarization and misinformation. With the objective of rethinking the relevance of this cultural scene off in the city of Rio de Janeiro, a cartography of sonic-musical controversies was constructed, which involved research in carrying out a bibliographical review and analysis of journalistic material, field observations, interviews and informal conversations, following the tracks of human and non-human actors, as well as tracking their urban tactics and cunning.

Author Biographies

  • Cíntia Sanmartin Fernandes, Rio de Janeiro State University

    PhD in Political Sociology from the Federal University of Santa
    Catarina (UFSC), with a sandwich doctorate from René University
    Descartes-Paris V/Sorbonne, having completed post-doctoral internships,
    respectively in the Postgraduate Program in Communication at
    Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo (PUC-SP), in the Program
    Postgraduate in Communication at the Federal University of Rio
    de Janeiro (UFRJ), at the Paul-Valéry University of Montpellier and at
    École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales de Paris. It is currently
    CNPq researcher, professor of the Postgraduate Program in
    Communication from the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) and
    coordinator of the Communication, Art and City Research Group (CAC).
    She is the author of the following books: The Moving Force of Music (Sulina, 2023), Musical Cities (Sulina, 2018), Music on the streets of Rio de Janeiro (Ed. Intercom, 2014); Sociability, Communication
    and Politics (E-Papers, 2009).

  • Micael Herschmann, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro

    Historian with postgraduate training in Communication and Sciences
    Social and researcher at CNPq. He has been working for several years in
    quality not only as Full Professor at the School of Communication and the
    Postgraduate Program in Communication at the Federal University
    of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), but also as coordinator of the Center for
    Studies and Projects in Communication (NEPCOM) at the same institution.
    He is currently developing the research “Communication and Music in Spaces
    Urban areas of the State of Rio de Janeiro”. He is the author of the following books: The mobilizing force of music (Sulina, 2023); Musical Cities (Sulina, 2018), Music on the streets of Rio de Janeiro (Ed.
    Intercom, 2014), Music industry in transition (Estação das Cores
    e das Letras, 2010), Lapa, city of music (Mauad, 2007), The funk and
    hip hop invades the scene (Ed. UFRJ, 2000).
