The present research aims to establish a perspective on the concept of social control within the history of the most influential communication theories. The resulting narrative seeks to historically connect theories belonging to both sociological and social psychological traditions. The concept of social control serves as an integrative framework to understand the evolution of communication thought as a consequence of communication researchers’ concern with issues of behavioral and social regulation over time. Since Lippmann, at least, there has been a consistent focus on how human attitudes are regulated in an increasingly mediatized society.
