Periphery live: democratization of media and socialization of information through the hip-hop from Maranhão State

This paper discusses the relationship between hip-hop movement and
the democratization of media through the “Urban Quilombo” movement. Reflects
the process of hip-hop development at São Luís do Maranhão, Brazil, in the
context of city peripherization. Analyzes the formation of ethnic-racial identity of
the young people involved in this movement and the production of dissemination
of information through their political and cultural activities and the creation,
organization and participation in community radio programs in poor and black
neighborhoods of the capital of Maranhão. Therefore, we define the hip-hop as
a cultural-political movement and understand that the hip-hop movement from
Maranhão state, through the “Urban Quilombo”, is constituted as a possibility for
identification and mobilization for considerable portion of black and poor youth
that seek a collective act.
