Abstract

The internet thrives on passions: it is a place where anything can be
found, since there is always someone willing to share their hobbies and obsessions.
Even in the case of the most obscure interests, there will always be a vast set of
other people that have the same preferences, either surpassing national borders
or keeping a local specificity. In Facebook groups, this phenomenon also applies,
and being the currently dominant social network makes it a privileged place for
a netnographic analysis. That analysis is the proposal of this paper, taking as its
study case a group, predominantly Portuguese, whose name might be mistaken
for that of a religious cult if the irony wasn’t so obvious, and in which the members
are invited, through a theme that changes daily, to show their knowledge of
contemporary pop rock music.
