Abstract

Local radio represents a major revolution in the media sector in Portugal
after the revolution of April 25, 1974, which ended with a dictatorship in the
country. A scenario characterized by the existence of three main radio stations and
some small stations went up to nearly four hundred stations around all over the
country. Local radio represented a space for the presence of local communities in
the media, representing a new stage for new voices and themes. However, today
we assist to an identity crisis that affects its reason for existence. There are local
radios that only relay other stations, some closed doors and a significant part of
that do so with great difficulties. In this article we analyze, starting from several
indicators, the situation of local radio in Portugal at the beginning of XXI century.
