Abstract

This article studies the contribution of the concept of public sphere, proposed by Habermas and other contemporary authors, for understanding and deepening of citizenship and communication studies. Initially, this paper focuses the genealogy of the concept of public sphere and its appropriation to the debate on the consolidation of Brazilian democracy. Then, this paper specifies the space of freedom and emancipation beyond the regulatory institutions in contemporary society - the state, economy and community. Then this article introduces the discussion of communication issues, linked to notions of democracy and citizenship, and placing the concept of the public sphere as central to the current theoretical and epistemological discussion about communication and citizenship.
