Abstract

The article refers back to the publishing context of
João Guimarães Rosa’s Sagarana in 1946 by focusing
on some of the reviews and documents published in the
press at the time. We depart from a collection of cuttings
organized by Rosa himself and which now belongs
to the Fundo João Guimarães Rosa of the Instituto de
Estudos Brasileiros of the Universidade de São Paulo.
Our intention is to observe the book’s entry in the literary
local canon. Amongst matters of genre, style, originality
and repetition we also discuss the polemic raised
by Álvaro Lins’s inaugurating article, accused of promoting
the book in exchange for a position favored by
Itamaraty, institution where Guimarães Rosa worked.
Our purpose is to provide an investigation on the factors
which construct a literary name, apart from the
literary excellence credited to Guimarães Rosa’s text.
