Abstract

This article poses an analysis of the tragical elements in São Bernardo, a novel by Graciliano Ramos, basing itself mainly on the comprehension of the tragic as proposed by Raymond Williams. In order to do so, it seeks to perceive the tragic in the light of the new relations and laws - not the metaphysical ones present in the Antique, but the principle of private property and commodity which rules the capitalist society - , establishing a meaningful correlation between the particular facts and general contemporary moral and beliefs. In this case, with Paulo Honório representing the "general principle" of the capitalist order and Madalena figuring as a tragic heroine who defies it.
