Diário do hospício by Lima Barreto and Hospício é Deus by Maura Lopes Cançado are autobiographical narratives that reveal the authors experiences of confinement in Brazilian psychiatric institutions. The works denounce the degrading conditions of the hospitals, the social exclusion of the inmates, and the systematic repression of marginalized subjectivities. These narratives transcend the diaristic account, transforming literary fragmentation and introspection into resistance, turning the intimate into the public, and denouncing the degrading situation to which the mentally ill are subjected, condemned to live on the margins of society. They also question social norms and redefine the boundaries between sanity and delirium. This study aims to analyze the diaries of Lima Barreto (2017) and Maura Cançado (2021), both written during their stays in asylums , using the theories of Michel Foucault (2000; 2014) and Erving Goffman (2008) on madness and stigma, David Arrigucci’s (1998) perspective on the text from the first-person narrator. Thus, we recognize that these diaries are not merely intimate records but testimonies of struggle against the silencing and dehumanization of the “insane,” serving as critiques of Brazilian society and the mental health system of their time.
