Time and Memory: Denarration in the Novel A Chave de Casa, by Tatiana Salem Levy

The strangeness provoked by the autofiction novel A chave de casa by Brazilian contemporary writer Tatiana Salem Levy can be primarily explained by the theory of denarration, typical of great postmodern novels, as defined by its proposer, the American narratologist Brian Richardson. This strategy involves the unexpected and innovative use of classical aspects of narration, such as narrative time and the narrator's memory, and has been little studied in Brazil. The present study proposes to analyze how the highly elaborate construction of the novel based on these and other critical issues of autofiction narrative produces an instigating text aligned with significant trends in contemporary world literature. Above all, Levy's work challenges the reader to face the new chaotic reality of postmodernity, which emerged with the advent of hitherto ignored "minorities" and which generates/reflects today’s multiple identity crises.
