Revisiting the past self: Mapping the personal and social identity of the narrative voice in Guia afetivo da Periferia

In Affective Guide of the Periphery, author Marcus Vinícius Faustini draws on memories from his childhood, adolescence, and adult life as he moves—both voluntarily and involuntarily—through the city of Rio de Janeiro, creating an affective itinerary of his lived experiences. As he describes these moments, the reader is invited into a multisensory experience that challenges the commonly held negative perceptions of the city, offering instead a personal reinterpretation that highlights the possibilities it holds. Therefore, the aim of this article is to analyze how Faustini’s autobiography, through accounts of his many displacements and the temporal distance from the lived experiences, generates a personal and social identity by retrospectively reflecting on his voluntary and involuntary movements through Rio de Janeiro during his youth. This analysis is grounded in theories of memory by Paul Ricoeur and Brigitt Neumann (2008); memory and fiction by Paul John Eakin (2000); memory and continuous identity by Malouf (2000); as well as Walter Benjamin’s (1929) concept of the flâneur; and Michel de Certeau’s (1994) strategies and tactics.
