Abstract

The urban development of Rio de Janeiro presents marked influences. Originally, the portuguese town design characterized the demarcation of streets and the way buildings were located. In the city’s evolution, in the name of modernisms, we can see the french, english and canonic influences of modern urbanism since the nineteen-fifties. This can be seen in the process of creation and conservation of open spaces without buildings, with or without vegetation, legitimizing its representation of the analysis of this type of urban design. In the analysis of changes of influences in the landscape of the city, one example is the “Largo do Machado”, where the open space offers a clear example of this influence.
