Abstract

Mainly from the 40´s on brazilian cities has presented a significant process of urbanization with implications in the increase of the urban population and the need of urban land for dwelling as well. This paper aims: to analyze the design of parcels of urban land as a form of urban expansion; to evaluate how the aggregation of different parcels in different locations structure the urban fabric; to indicate possible actions that can be taken by local governments in order to avoid negative outcomes presented in current procedures. As a case study the formation of the urban structure of Alvorada city, located in the Porto Alegre metropolitan area, is analyzed due to the fact that it started its development from successive and independent designs. The paper reconstructs the formation of the urban structure of Alvorada over time and its implications in terms of the potential social use of the urban space.
