(Trans)see landscapes en route between home and school: discovering ordinary heritage via the eyes of children and youths from the peripheries of ‘cidade maravilhosa’

This study investigates everyday heritage and affective spatial appropriations in the peripheries of Rio de Janeiro by analyzing the drawings of children and youths who study in the municipal public school system, reporting their perceptions and desires on the daily commute between their homes and school. Stemming from inter-institutional partnerships between Universidade Federal Fluminense, Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, and the Rio de Janeiro City Hall, this study is based on the importance of children’s views of their own daily lives for city planning. First results show that free spaces to play configure affective heritages that take many forms: vacant lots, soccer fields, community squares, rivers, urban canals, among others. This affective and distressing mapping constitute landscapes and heritage from perspectives that are often invisible, stimulating thinking about inclusive strategies for heritage education and access to the municipality.
