The evolution process of the architecture in downtown São Paulo

The article discusses the evolution process of the architecture in downtown São Paulo, with an emphasis on the role driven by the State by means of legislation and urbanistic interventions. The central region housed the first verticalization pole in the city, exhibiting commercial buildings that represents the evolution of architecture over more than a century. Besides reflecting distinct architectonic styles, the different commercial buildings typologies are also due to the legal rules and incentives in use at the time they were built.
