Building typology in the Mansions and the shanties by Gilberto Freyre

The current article is based on The mansions and the shanties, a book by Gilberto Freyre. To a certain extent, it is a reading of this sociologist's work regarding Brazilian architecture and the creation of a building typology. The current article investigates the buildings representing different urban and semi-urban dwelings in the 19th century: houses of two or more stories (the sobrados), shanties (the mocambos), one-story homes, country houses, street-corner houses, chalets, and slum tenements. In Freyre's book, these types of buildings are examined with the intention of revealing some aspects and characteristics of brazilian society. In the current article, they become the object of study and are analyzed from the point of view of the history of brazilian architecture.Downloads
