The aim of this paper is to expose possible approaches of the history of medieval philosophy from the debate between Alain de Libera and Claude Panaccio. Although the discussion is particularly about the historiography of medieval philosophy, the background is a discussion about how to deal with the history of philosophy in general or, ultimately, how to read a philosophical text
