Our History
The initiative to create a scientific journal for undergraduates in Social Sciences came from a group of students at the University of São Paulo, who got together around the idea of promoting and giving visibility to the research carried out by undergraduates. The idea was presented to the professors, who immediately welcomed the initiative.
After meetings to articulate support and define the scope of the journal, Primeiros Estudos was officially founded on November 24, 2010, at an event organized by its Executive Committee. The event marked the opening of the first call for papers, and was attended by professors from the Undergraduate Committee of the Social Sciences course at FFLCH/USP.
One of the distinguishing features of Primeiros Estudos was the fact that it was published electronically and free of charge, betting on the use of the Open Journal System (OJS) to manage and publish content on the internet, a platform that was still in its infancy in 2010 in Brazil. The gamble proved fruitful: in addition to OJS being the software recommended by CAPES for electronic publishing, in 2012 the Technical Department of the Integrated Library System (SIBI/USP) relaunched USP's scientific journal portal using OJS. In partnership with the IT Technical Section of FFLCH/USP, they began the project of training editors in OJS with the appropriate technical support. Primeiros Estudos has been part of USP's journal portal since its launch on October 22, 2012.
During the editorial process for issue 3 of Primeiros Estudos, other events contributed to consolidating the project. Humanitas, the FFLCH/USP publishing house, took over the editing and layout of our issues from then on. The Translations section began to count on the financial support of the three departments of the Social Sciences course at FFLCH/USP to obtain the copyright for texts suggested by lecturers for the subjects taught at the undergraduate level. Finally, the institutional recognition of Primeiros Estudos as an official journal of the Faculty of Philosophy, Letters and Human Sciences of the University of São Paulo (FFLCH/USP), approved by the faculty's congregation on September 27, 2012. From issue number 3, the Executive Committee became the Editorial Board.
