Abstract

This paper aims at reecting on processes of rupture and continuity considering the Jasmine Revolution – the Tunisian movements of the Arab Spring between 2010 and 2011. We analyzed the relationship between Mohamed Bouazizi’s self-immolation after conicts with the Tunisian guard and his image, followed by a section of narratives presented by the British newspaper The Guardian. We regard this episode’s representations and its eects on the Western media, while taking into account the East/West relations. Finally, a deeper investigation of the socio-political context was carried out in order to think about the colonial context, the colonizer and colonized identity constructions and the limits they place on changes. The studies carried out here point to ruptures in the symbolic sphere, such as the change of the political regime, and continuities in the economic eld, given Tunisia’s dependence on foreign investments and the continuity of poverty and unemployment of the Tunisian population.
