Abstract

This review critically examines America, América: A New History of the New World (2025), by Greg Grandin, which advances an integrated hemispheric history by rejecting the separation between “United States history” and “Latin American history.” It aims to reconstruct the book’s central thesis and assess its contribution to International Law debates on sovereignty, conquest, non-intervention, and multilateral institutional design. Methodologically, the review adopts an analytical-interpretive reading structured around key argumentative axes, especially the semantic dispute over the name “America,” the notion of immanent critique, and the genealogy linking the Monroe Doctrine, Pan-Americanism, and the formation of international governance formulas. As its main considerations, the book repositions Latin America as a constitutive agent in the development of normative vocabularies that contest the liberal order, while also exposing the ambivalence of principles mobilized to justify hegemony and intervention. The review further identifies two tensions: the risk of homogenizing Latin America’s internal diversity and the loss of empirical depth entailed by the book’s long-duration ambition. It concludes that the book offers a valuable framework for understanding continuities between hemispheric contestation and contemporary international law.
