Abstract

In “The formation of the Latin American collection at MoMA” Eustáquio Ornelas Cot Jr. relates politics and culture by analyzing the formation of the Latin American collection, and its catalog, at the Museum of Modern Art in New York - USA. The doctor in History of Art, Culture and Politics in the Americas (2022) from the Faculty of Philosophy, Letters and Human Sciences (FFLCH-USP) explains in the three chapters published in 2019 how the art collection started in 1935 reaffirms labels and creates interpretative frameworks by proposing a comparative vision of “other” art with American art. Situated in the historical context of the North American Good Neighbor Policy, which aimed to create friendly relations between the countries of the American continent, the museum favors compositions that affirm a homogenization of Latin America and that value Mexican artists and artists. independent of explicit political connections.
