Abstract

Losing one’s mother brings an assortment of emotions that cannot always be expressed by the individual, considering that some people prefer to keep what they feel to themselves rather than talk about the subject with anyone. To better understand this, this qualitative research sought to understand what mechanisms people use in their daily lives to cope with the feeling of longing after such a significant loss. For this purpose, eight people over 18, without a diagnosis of mental disorder, were interviewed. Initially, participants answered an online form with general questions and the interview questions. Signing of the informed consent form (ICF) and the interviews were conducted in person. Data analysis provided a greater understanding of how grieving children feel after their mother’s death, revealing that even with immobilization some mechanisms were created. Physical exercises, writing and studying, thoughts focused on happy things, sharing feelings with people for comfort, and seeking religiosity to help them cope with longing and grief were mentioned. Additionally, despite the pain caused by the loss, the interviewees expressed not wanting to exchange their mother for any other who is still alive.
