Abstract

Assuming intolerance to diversity, this paper discusses some reactions aroused by the interaction with a partner who has an unusual or disabled, thence stigmatized, body. The monster metaphor is used to analyse the historical approach to abnormality, thus identifying the value judgements responsible for the perpetuity of the stigma attributed to those who have (or who are, as Sartre would put it) a deviant body.
