This study aims at contributing to the development of ethical recruitment strategies for AIDS vaccine trials through the analysis of interviews about the meaning attributed to vaccines. Four models of how vaccines work were identified: a therapeutic model in which vaccines are seen as a form of medicine; an embryonic preventive model centered on the function of protection; an agency model focused on the role of antibodies; and a full model where function and mechanisms are integrated. The availability and use of these models have important implications for the decision to enroll (or not) as volunteers in AIDS vaccine trials.Downloads
