Abstract

The analysis of one hundred and fifty three travel books written by foreigners who have passed through Rio de Janeiro, from 1803 to 1900, led to the concept of the household group to denominate the set of people of diverse generations and social status, without blood relationships, who frequent the same household. The choice of sexual partners and the problems of breast feeding and prostitution, away others, reveal the sinister marks of slavery and ambiguous and contradictory relations of dependency and repugnancy which the living conditions gave root to.
