Abstract

This article analyses a film based on a play by Ariel Dorfman called "Death and the Maiden". The film, which carries the same title, was released in 1994 and directed by Roman Polanski. It is a psychological thriller featuring only three characters: Paulina, Miranda and Escobar, played by Sigorney Weaver, Ben Kingsley and Stuart Wilson, respectively. As it deals with themes highly relevant to Psychology - such as the memory of trauma, psychological elaboration and the restorative potential of justice - this film, along with some contributions from today's theorists, gives rise to considerations of great worth when dealing with issues related to the recollection of social catastrophes both intersubjectively and communally.
