Abstract

In the Knowledge Economy, the capacity to systematically innovate must be in the center of business strategies. Nowadays, this capacity is strongly correlated to the quality of the links a firm establishes with external sources of knowledge. Those links may be even more relevant in the case of latecomers firms. Recently, the Open Innovation (OI) strategy gained importance within business literature targeted to managers of firms from developed countries. However, the OI research from the perspective of Brazilian firms from technology-based sectors is still developing. This theoretical essay has an exploratory nature and uses the theory triangulation method. Its objective is to propose an articulation between the OI strategy and the absorptive, technological, and dynamics capacities models, in order to integrate their common and complementary elements into a conceptual framework developed from the perspective of Brazilian firms from business sectors in which Brazil needs to gain international competitiveness. This essay offers a proposal of conceptual framework that challenges the instrumental and reductionistic perspectives of OI. The analysis of the proposed model demonstrates that it can be used by the firms focused in this study, as a tool to support the management of technological innovation in hypercompetitive sectors, which are marked by rapid and profound changes, particularly regarding technological standards and correspondent business models.
