Abstract

Knowledge creation, sharing and acquisition of information by joining resources and capabilities are strategies that increase the likelihood of organizational success and this fact is indicative for the growing trend in formation of strategic alliances. However, this collaborative organizational innovation experiences high rates of instability. This study focuses essentially on investigation of the main factors leading to instabilities and disintegration of strategic alliances. A case study was conducted that dealt with the rise of two export consortia of small and medium enterprises in the textile sector in the State of Sao Paulo. Exterior factors in economy, politics, law and culture as well as interior factors such as lack of trust anddisparity in organizational strength of the partners in the alliance are reported as being critical in alliance instability.
