Abstract

Throughout the second half of the 18th Century, under the Marquis of Pombal ruling and influence, Portugal witnessed the exacerbation of a regalist policy addresses to the assertion of the Crown power against Rome and the national (and imperial) Church and its syntony with State purposes. Endowed with privileges, sustaining close ties with the Holy See, considered drains of human factor for the cloisters and of the wealth that would be applied to the increase of State and to the common good, the religious orders received special attention from the illustrated Regalism. If the material abundance of those corporations constituted a sensitive spot to the regalist thought, its large arrearages received attention from pombalines and post pombalines statesmen as well. Unclear matter for the national historiography, in this article are analyzed the ideas and legislation to combat the regular clergy indebtedness in Portuguese Empire and – under a eminently empirical way – the attempts of financial reorganization of Nossa Senhora do Carmo do Rio de Janeiro Province convents.
