Abstract

This article aims to take stock of how the theme of childhood has been discussed in historiography. Given the extent of the issue, we adopted as an analytical focus the non-Brazilian historiography on this problem, especially the European and the US, from mid-twentieth century. Therefore we will make a panorama starting from Philippe Aries’s book, Social History of Child and Family, first published in the early 1960s. From this work, we will continue with its critics, advocates and several new trends in the study of childhood in history that have been developed.
